Why do we say that it is the time to save water and why do we say we have water scarcity Some basic facts about water : Read More...
- Only about 3% of surface water is fresh water and Water consumption is increasing twice as fast as the number of people consuming it.
- Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface, but one fifth of the world’s population lacks access to clean drinking water.
- The Earth's oceans are the most important carbon sink on the planet along with rainforests.
- Floods are the most frequent disaster worldwide.
- Waterborne diseases affect about four billion people every year.
- It is expected that the demand for water will double during the next 25 years.
- By 2025, nearly 2 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water shortage, where water resources per person fall below the recommended level of 500 cubic meters per year.
- A kilo of industrially produced meat needs about 10,000 liters of water to produce.
- People in rich countries use ten times more water than people in poor countries.
- Agriculture takes up 70% of the water we use.
- Water scarcity already affecting every continent and four out of every ten people in the world.
- Water scarcity forces people to rely on unsafe sources of drinking water which leads to the endangerment of the increasing population’s health. IT encourages people to store water in their homes which can increase the risk of household water contamination and provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Water is fleeting everywhere and we still have not realized the importance of water in our daily lives. We continue to waste water and now we are standing on the verge of a severe crisis.World Bank warns India of an era of severe water scarcity. It says “Unless dramatic changes are made in the way the government manages water, India will have neither the cash to maintain and build new infrastructure, nor the water required for the economy and people,” in September 2006. It adds that 70% of India’s irrigation water and 80% of its domestic water supplies now come from its rapidly diminishing groundwater reserves. Fresh drinking water is the biggest problem that we face today. 97% of world’s water salty and only 3% of water is usable and we are running short of the less resources we have. The experts have commented that the country’s population will surpass the availability of water in the next three decades. Everybody needs water and everybody needs to take responsibility.A little step forward can help us in water-conservation. Not only a single step, making more and more people aware of the necessity of water conservation is very much needed in current conditions of our nation. Indian government has done very little to address the massive water shortage problem and its impact on overall infrastructure of the nation.
We do have some policies in our state A.P.. - Rainwater harvesting has been made mandatory in all new buildings with an area of 300 sq m or more.
- Tentative for enforcing this deadline was June 2001
- Under Govt GO.Dated Ms.No. 8 6, Dated the 3rd March, 2006 – No construction is allowed to get a municipal permission to be built without a water harvesting pit.
We have knowledge – but no lessonsWe have policies – but no implementationWe have water – but no proper utilization. Lets not wait till we get lessons out of it .. lets not wait for the policies to be implemented on their own….rather lets make sure that they get implemented and finally lets utilize water in the way it deserves. Rain water harvesting is a big solution to the water problems we face. We have initiated a rally on 22-Mar-09 - To launch a campaign which relates water conservation and water harvesting needs.
- To pass a message that there are some people working on spreading the awareness.
- To welcome people who wishes to join this wise act
The rally starts On 22-Mar-09 at 8.00AM . from Sec-bad Mahathma Gandhi statue and culminates at Swamy Vivekananda Statue at Tank bund forming a human chain.. You might have water today for your daily use, you might have water for your industrial use. You might be getting water from other state’s rivers too. But we never know..how long can we live on lended water.. Join us and make it mandate to contribute everyone’s hand in water conservation. Lets ask them to encourage water harvesting. Lets ask Govt. to implement its policies strictly Do your part by conserving, recycling and protecting water more efficiently.
