Dear Nature Lovers,

From past few months we were all hearing about a Global summit on Environment, which everyone called as COP15 / Copenhagen meet. But many of us are not clearly aware of what exactly is Copenhagen and why only COP15 and what was the purpose of the meet and finally what was the outcome of the meet? Was it fruitful or not ? These kind of questions always struck in our mind but unable to judge ourselves with the proper solution for that.

Through this I would like to share my views on one topic on a daily basis. So that it makes us to learn the facts and even helps others ( who are not aware of..) to know and follow slowly...

As a part of our first day..Let us know What is Copenhagen and why only COP15 ??

Topic 1: What is Copenhagen?

Geographical Information:

Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark, located on the island of Zealand. "Copenhagen is sometimes called the Paris of the North"
It is the biggest city in Scandinavia. Copenhagen is placed on the east coast of Zealand and alongside the Sound (Øresund). A bridge and tunnel called “Øresundsbroen” - connects Copenhagen with Sweden and its metropolitan areas is named the Oresund Region.

Native name: København
Urban Area: 1980 Km²
Population : 1,8 million (Greater Copenhagen and regions)
Danish Parliament: Copenhagen
Royal residence: Copenhagen
Currency: Danish Kroner
Airport: Kastrup
Cruise Ports: Langelinie - Nordhavnen
Time Zone: UCT+1
Founded: 1167

It is considered as a centre of culture and arts with plenty of sightseeing and entertainment activities to offer visitors, together with multitude of shopping facilities and the longest pedestrian street system in the world. Copenhagen is the seat of the National Parliament (Folketinget), the Royal Residence and Supreme High Court.

Topic 2:Why COP15?

COP15 is the fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The conference held from December 7th to December 18th 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The COP is the highest body of the UNFCCC and consists of environment ministers who meet once a year to discuss the convention’s developments. It is expected that ministers and officials from over 175 countries took part.

Any queries on these two topics are accepted. Please feel free to respond for this thread.Let's share on the next topic tomorrow.

Happy sharing!!

Greetings!!

Its pleasure in sharing with you..Lets step in to the next topic,
What was the purpose of the meet?

The purpose of the meet was to create a new climate treaty, replacing the Kyoto protocol, which was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997 and implemented on 16 February 2005. The Kyoto Protocol which sets binding targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has been signed and ratified by 184 parties of the UN Climate Convention.
The Kyoto Protocol, expires in 2012. Copenhagen is a best chance at securing an international deal which includes the world’s major economies, major emitters, and all the current and future populations who will experience the impacts.

The world has small, but diminishing, window in which to combat climate change, and an unprecedented scale of international cooperation will be required so that we can secure an environmentally, economically and socially stable future.

Climate change is a reality and we are already seeing the evidence and impacts of it around the world.

Thank you.

Happy sharing!!

Kashyap Devulapalli.
